The two women selected from Women In New Recovery attended a young peoples network for recovery. They participated by responding to 4 panels. The panels included a variety of people. Included were, young people in recovery, representatives from SAMHSA, Interventionist, Family member’s of those in recovery etc. Also in attendance were Washington appointed personnel such as David K. Mineta,Deputy Director of Demand Reduction White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and Kevin Jennings, Assistant Deputy Secretary of Education – Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS). One room was packed with an amazing collaboration of energy and strength all to help put a voice on recovery.
Mid day everyone broke into small groups to get down to issues such as sober recovery homes, the stigma put on addiction and recovery, prevention, as well as solutions. Those who usually do the speaking, attended solely to reverse their usual role, and listened.
A huge part of this meeting was how to promote recovery and focus the public’s attention to those with the disease of addiction. A question was brought up:Why is it that you see pink ribbons everywhere for breast cancer awareness, or red ribbons for AIDS awareness, but there isn’t a ribbon to recognize those in recovery from addiction? This meeting allowed the selected young people in recovery to collaborate with one another and formulate strategies on how to get the message of recovery out there.
“The amazing group that attended was able to really put a face and voice on recovery this past week. It was an opportunity to stand up and begin a new chapter for recovery, it was a blessing.”
